Maximizing Space to Increase Your Boarding Kennel's Capacity

As a dog kennel or daycare owner, one of the primary goals is to maximize boarding capacity. When you maximize boarding capacity, you maximize profit, and that's the name of the game when it comes to running a successful business. This means having the space to accommodate as many dogs as possible, while still providing a safe and comfortable environment for each of them. Make Use of Vertical Space

When it comes to maximizing space in your kennel, it's important to think about using vertical space as well as horizontal space. This could mean installing shelving units or stacking cages, or even building mezzanine levels within your kennel. You're going to need a lot of storage space at your kennel, so why not use the wasted wall space instead of taking up valuable floor space. Install some wall shelving units and put to use all that vertical space that would have just been wasted.

Consider Custom-Built Kennels

By investing in custom-built kennels that are designed specifically to fit the space you have, you can make the most of every inch of space and increase your boarding capacity. Going with pre-built kennels will save you money, but custom built might be able to make you more money in the long term. Imagine if you're able to fit five pre-built kennels into your space or 8 custom kennels. Those three extra kennels will generate thousands of extra dollars in revenue over the course of the year. Multiply that by being in business for 10 years and you're talking tens of thousands of dollars. Maybe going with custom-built kennels is worth it after all.

Utilize Outdoor Spaces

If you have an outdoor area, consider using it to create additional play areas or outdoor kennels. This can be an especially effective solution during the warmer months, when dogs can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Most boarding facilities use there outdoor space as a play area, but if you're looking to boost your revenue, you might be able to install some outdoor kennels if you live in an area where the temperature is moderate. Most clients are going to want their dogs to stay inside during their boarding stay at your business, but you could offer outdoor boarding as an option for a lower price, for example. If you're looking to do some construction, you could use half-and-half kennels, where half is inside and half is outside. This way, you've got more space inside for boarding, but you're also using your outdoor space.

Create a Flexible Layout

If possible, try to create a layout for your kennel that allows for flexibility and adaptability. For example, you could invest in modular kennel units that can be reconfigured to meet the needs of different dogs and groups. If your entire business is built using single-dog units, then you're wasting space. More often than not, you're going to have clients that want their dogs boarded together, but both dogs won't fit inside a single-dog kennel. You'll have to use two kennels for this family appointment and you'll suffer on the revenue side. If you were to use modular kennels, you could easily move around some units and accommodate two dogs without having to give up one of your single-dog units.

Make the Most of Shared Spaces

If you have shared spaces within your kennel, such as a common area or a kitchen, try to make the most of these spaces by using them for multiple purposes. For example, you could use the kitchen as a place for dogs to eat, play and socialize, as well as a place to prepare food. If you have a relatively large lobby at your facility, you could utilize that area for smaller dog boarding, or perhaps boarding where the owner provides their own crate. Some dogs are more comfortable inside their own carrier. Instead of using one of your units, you could easily put the car carrier inside the front lobby and lock up the dogs at night. This way, you're increasing your boarding revenue while also utilizing all space possible.
