An outdoor play area is a key feature of any successful dog daycare, offering dogs the space to exercise, socialize, and enjoy the fresh air. If your facility doesn't have an outdoor play space, it's almost a guarantee that you're losing clients. People want to
spoil their dogs and many will choose a different dog daycare if yours doesn't have an outdoor play space. Designing this space thoughtfully can enhance the overall experience for the dogs in your care, while also making your daycare more appealing to pet owners. If you're thinking about adding an outdoor play place, or you're redesigning your current one, here are three basic tips for creating an outdoor play area that’s safe, engaging, and easy to maintain.
1. Focus on Safety and Security
The safety and well-being of your dogs should be the foundation of a well-designed outdoor play area. Start by ensuring the area is
securely enclosed with durable fencing that is high enough to prevent dogs from jumping over. The last thing you want is a pet escape. Consider using fencing materials that dogs can’t easily chew through or dig under, ie METAL! Gates should be secure and self-closing to prevent accidental escapes. It's also a good idea to use double-gates so that pets can't escape when you're letting a new dog inside.
The ground surface is another important consideration. Opt for materials that are safe and comfortable for dogs, such as artificial turf, pea gravel, or rubberized play surfaces. These materials provide good traction, are gentle on paws, and are easy to clean. Avoid surfaces like concrete or sharp gravel that can cause injuries. Additionally, ensure that the play area has proper drainage to prevent standing water, which can lead to muddy conditions and increase the risk of slips and falls. The better your area drains, the fewer free baths you're going to have to give to dogs when they come in muddy and it's on you to clean them up.
2. Create a Stimulating Environment
An outdoor play area should offer more than just open space; it should provide a variety of activities to
keep dogs engaged and stimulated. Dogs need to be mentally and physically stimulated, otherwise they're going to cause destruction. It's just their nature. Incorporate different zones within the play area, such as open spaces for running, shaded areas for rest, and obstacle courses for mental and physical challenges. Agility equipment, like tunnels, ramps, and hoops, can add an extra level of excitement and help dogs burn off energy.
Make sure to section off an area for smaller or senior pets so that they can still enjoy the outdoors without getting bulldozed by the younger and more energetic dogs. Natural elements, like small trees, shrubs, or even a sandpit, can provide enrichment and mimic the outdoor experiences dogs enjoy on walks. Be sure to use only non-toxic plants and materials, as some common garden plants can be harmful to dogs. Also, consider adding features like splash pools or water fountains, especially in warmer climates, to help dogs stay cool and hydrated while they play.
3. Ensure Easy Maintenance and Cleanliness
Maintaining a clean and well-kept outdoor play area is crucial for the health and happiness of the dogs in your care. It's also an easy way to impress your clients. When they drop off Fido and see a sparkling clean facility, they can rest easy that you'll take good care of their dog. Choose materials and surfaces that are easy to clean and maintain.
Artificial turf (which is super resistant) can be easily hosed down and sanitized, while pea gravel allows for good drainage and quick cleanup. Regular maintenance tasks, such as waste removal, disinfecting surfaces, and checking the condition of fencing and equipment, should be part of your daily routine. Remember, we want to avoid injuries and escapes. To keep the area looking its best, consider landscaping elements that require minimal upkeep but still provide an attractive environment. Regularly inspect the play area for any hazards, such as broken equipment or damaged fencing, and address them promptly to ensure the safety of the dogs.
It doesn't take much to convert a barren piece of land into a super enriching outdoor play area. Sit down, draw up your plans and then get on it!
